What Documents Do You Need for Immigration?

Even though a large number of immigrants have entered the United States in search of a better life, news reports show that a noticeable number of US citizens are also immigrating to other countries, looking for better academic and work opportunities. The recent overturning of Roe Vs Wade, the increasing cost of living, and several other factors have contributed to US residents moving to Canada and European countries. According to a recent Gallup poll, around 15% of US citizens have admitted to wanting to move to other countries permanently, given the right circumstances.

Whether you want to visit another country or want to move permanently to a new destination, this blog discusses what documents you need for immigration.

Passport

One of the most important documents US citizens need to immigrate to other countries is the US passport. Luckily, the United States passport is the 7th most powerful one globally. It allows US passport holders travel freedom, allowing them to enter several other countries. Currently, US passport holders can get visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry to 186 countries. However, it’s advisable to check if the country you plan on visiting offers visa-on-arrival, otherwise you might get stuck!

This means that if you want to visit a new country on a visitor visa, you can only apply for and get a US passport and stay in a new country for some time without submitting extra documents as required. However, if you want to work or study in another country, you might need additional paperwork.

Birth Certificate or Proof of Citizenship

If you’re a minor under the age of 16 and you want to travel abroad from the United States, you might need a birth certificate or proof of citizenship to enter the country. You can present both the passport and your proof of US citizenship to show that you’ll return to the United States once your trip is over. Additionally, people who’re immigrating to new countries with their families need to show the legal relationship between them in the form of birth certificates and marriage documents.

Language Requirement Documents

People who’re planning on applying to colleges or jobs outside of the United States often need to present language proficiency documents when they need a study or work visa. Therefore, based on the country and which stream you’re applying for, you might have to show that you’re proficient in the language of that country. For instance, Canada asks immigrants to submit proof of fluency in English or French when applying for certain work visas.

Visa

Even though the United States passport gives you no visa or visa-on-arrival entry to several countries, you can’t enter or immigrate to 27 countries without a visa. These include some Asian countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, and Iran; Middle Eastern Countries like Libya; African Countries like Congo and Chad; and Russia.

Filled Form

If you’re applying for a visit visa to any of the countries that don’t give visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to US citizens, you need to submit a filled visa form to immigrate to that country or even get a tourist visa.

Passport-Sized Pictures

Whether you’re applying for a work or study visa to a country that allows you to enter visa-free or a tourist visa to a country that requires US citizens to have a visa, you should attach your passport-sized pictures as a supporting document. The pictures shouldn’t be older than six months.

Travel Health Insurance

US citizens who are immigrating to other countries need to show that they have travel health insurance that will cover the entire duration of their visit to another country. However, once you apply for permanent residence in the new country, you’ll not require US travel health insurance.

Sufficient Funds Proof

Whether you’re applying for a visit visa or a work or study permit, you need to show that you have sufficient funds to cover your cost of living in a new country. You also have to show that you have booked accommodation and a return flight ticket, especially if you’re visiting a new country as a tourist. If you have a letter of invitation from your destination country, you also need to present that when applying for immigration.
